Bangladesh: Authorities advise against tourist travel in parts of Chattogram Division Oct. 8-31
Officials advise against tourist travel in Bandarban, Khagrachari, and Rangamati districts in Chattogram Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, Oct. 8-31.
Authorities have issued a travel advisory discouraging tourism in the Bandarban, Khagrachari, and Rangamati districts of the Chattogram Hill Tracts area Oct. 8-31. The decision comes amid heightened regional tensions, which have purportedly resulted in at least five fatalities and several injuries. The advisory is also a precautionary measure ahead of the Hindu Durga Puja festival Oct. 9-13. While no such measures have been announced, officials may advise travelers to cancel hotel bookings during the festival period.
Since mid-September, the government has implemented travel advisories and bans in certain areas of Khagrachhari and Rangamati. In recent years, it has consistently extended such measures at each scheduled expiration in the Chattogram Hill Tracts. Depending on operational needs, the government could expand the existing measures to encompass additional areas.
Authorities will maintain heightened security in the affected areas. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible. Isolated clashes between security forces and suspected militants cannot be ruled out.
Exercise a high degree of caution if operating in the affected regions. Register and maintain contact with diplomatic missions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
The Chattogram Hill Tracts area has historically been plagued by insurgent activity, and multiple foreign governments routinely advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the affected districts. Recent heightened tensions could potentially exacerbate the operational environment following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the associated civil unrest and violence that have occurred sporadically across the country. Additionally, minority communities in the region have faced increased scrutiny and targeting amid these tensions.
