Armed individuals attacked the San Jorge military base near Saravena, Arauca Department, at approximately 20:00 March 13. Reports indicate that the assailants launched three explosive devices inside the camp, injuring one soldier. The attackers were likely members of the National Liberation Army (Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional, ELN), which maintains a presence in the area.

Further attacks on Colombian security forces are possible in the area. Heightened security is likely in the area in the coming days.

Saravena is approximately 125 km (78 miles) west of Arauca.

Context

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been carrying out peace talks with the ELN to broker a ceasefire in a conflict that has lasted since the 1960s; the government reached a deal on March 10 to recognize the ELN with political status in order to negotiate a ceasefire. The March 13 attack will test the commitment of both sides to the negotiations, possible precipitating further violence.
