Colombia: Increased security almost certain in Bajo Cauca through at least March 6 amid clashes related to ongoing mining strike

Tight security almost certain in Bajo Cauca, Antioquia Department, Colombia, until at least March 6 amid violence related to mining strike

Warning

Event

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the Bajo Cauca region of the Antioquia Department amid ongoing violence through at least March 6. A strike by the mining industry workers expanded into protests and clashes on March 2. The violence prompted authorities to implement a curfew in Caucasia following protesters' attack against the city's municipality and other government buildings; the curfew began at 17:00 on March 3 and was in place until 06:00 March 4. Authorities have indicated that they will extend the curfew should the violence continue. A 17:00-05:00 curfew has also been in place in the neighboring town of La Apartada, Cordoba, since March 3; the measure will end on March 6.

Additionally, demonstrations are occurring in Caceres, El Bagre, and Taraza areas of Baja Cauca. Highway 25, which connects Medellin to the northern parts of the country, has been intermittently blocked off, prompting significant transport disruptions. Reports indicate that businesses have closed their shops in parts of Zaragoza and El Barre due to concerns over the spread of violence. Authorities believe that The Gulf Clan (Clan del Golfo), also known as the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia, AGC), is behind the labor actions as the government is attempting to crack down on illegal mining.

If the violence persists, authorities will likely implement further security measures, including restrictions on movement over the short term. Additional clashes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to heightened security or unrest.

Advice

Avoid all gatherings and demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. Depart the area at the sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official security advisories.
