DRC: Activist groups to stage protest march in Kinshasa March 11

Political activists to march in Kinshasa, DRC, March 11; traffic disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Political activists associated with the groups Commitment for Citizenship and Development (ECiDe), Together for the Republic, and Leadership and Governance for Development (LGD) plan to stage a protest march in Kinshasa on March 11. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce insecurity in the country's eastern regions and to show support for the Congolese armed forces. Participants will gather at the Ngaba roundabout at 10:00 before marching to Cardinal Malula Stadium. The march route will follow University Avenue, Kianza Street, the Lemba Super roundabout, the Limete interchange, Lumumba Boulevard, Sendwe Avenue, and Kasa Vubu Avenue. City officials have requested that organizers change the endpoint to the Tata Raphael Stadium due to security reasons. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to the area as a precaution. Localized traffic disruptions are likely. Confrontations between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Plan for traffic disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. If violence breaks out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
