Armed assailants attacked the village of Kirindera in Beni Territory, North Kivu Province, overnight March 11-12, killing at least 19 people and injuring an unknown number more. The attackers also set several buildings ablaze, including houses, a health clinic, and a hotel. Local officials stated the death toll is provisional. The motive for the assault is unclear. Authorities have blamed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) for the attack.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the coming hours and days. Further attacks are possible.
Kirindera is located near the town of Kyondo, which is located approximately 20km (12 miles) southeast of Butembo.
Context
The incident comes after ADF militants attacked two villages in the vicinity overnight March 8-9, leaving over 40 people dead.
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a State of Siege in Ituri and North Kivu. Fatal attacks and kidnappings conducted by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the area are regularly reported. Militants usually use significant and indiscriminate violence, and foreign personnel may become the target of attacks due to the perception they are wealthy and vulnerable.
