Armed assailants attacked the village of Mukondi in Beni Territory, North Kivu Province, overnight March 8-9, killing at least 36 people and injuring at least ten others. The motive for the assault is unclear. Authorities have blamed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) for the attack.
Mukondi is located around 30 km (19 miles) south of the city of Beni.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the coming hours and days. Further attacks are possible.
