Guatemala: Protests planned outside electoral court offices nationwide March 16

Activists to protest outside Supreme Electoral Court offices across Guatemala on March 16. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with several organizations, including the Peoples' Liberation Movement party (Movimiento para la Liberacion de los Pueblos, MLP), plan to hold protests outside several Supreme Electoral Court (Tribunal Supremo Electoral, TSE) offices nationwide March 16. The purpose of the action is to protest certain recent rulings by the TSE, including banning the MLP's presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the 2024 election.

Demonstrators will gather starting at 08:00. The largest of the gatherings will probably take place outside the TSE headquarters at 6A Avenida and 1A Calle in Guatemala City. Other likely protest sites include the TSE offices in Chimaltenango, Chiquimula, Escuintla, and Quetzaltenango.

It remains unclear how many participants the demonstrations may draw. Transport and business disruptions are likely near protest locations, as is a heightened security presence.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration locations. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
