Power outage reported across Kenya as of the evening of March 4 due to system disturbance. Plan for disruptions.

Warning

Event

Power outages have been reported nationwide as of the evening of March 4 due to a system disturbance. The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is working to restore power; It is unknown how long a complete electrical service restoration will take. However, KPLC states power has already been restored to several locations, including Eldoret, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

Commercial and communications disruptions are possible until technicians fully restore electrical service in areas that may still be experiencing power outages. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as hospitals, ATMs, and petrol stations. Outages could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Advice

Plan for disruptions to business and utility services across Kenya. Plan for possible road travel delays due to malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights. Follow local travel and security advice.
