Moldova: Opposition activists protest in central Chisinau March 16
Opposition groups lead protests in central Chisinau, Moldova, March 16. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
Opposition activists affiliated with the Shor party plan to protest at Parliament in Chisinau from 11:00 March 16 to demand payment of utility bills. Several hundreds of people are likely to take part in the demonstrations. A protest in Chisinau on March 12 resulted in scuffles between police and activists, and over 50 people were arrested. Further protests are likely in the coming days.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to monitor the protest. The demonstrations and associated security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.
Context
Moldova has experienced political turbulence and civil unrest in recent weeks. In February, the government resigned partly due to its inability to control the economy, given the pressures of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine. There have also been suspicions of a Russian-backed coup attempt, and the possibility of staged false-flag operations in the breakaway region of Transnistria.
Advice
As a standard precaution avoid the vicinity of the Parliament building, where protests have developed with little warning in recent days. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations in central Chisinau. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
