Netherlands: Unionized transport workers to continue strike action nationwide through early April /update 1

As of March 8, unionized transport workers to continue to strike across the Netherlands through early April; transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized transport workers affiliated with the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions (FNV) and the Christian National Trade Union Federation (CNV) launched a nationwide work stoppage March 8. The purpose of the action is to demand higher pay. The strike is affecting the regional transport operators including Arriva, Transdev, Qbuzz, EBS, Keolis, RET Bus, Hermes, and Connexxion. The strike action will continue on March 10.

A further limited strike will impact the Groningen and Friesland regional trains and the Keolis train routes Zwolle-Enschede and Zwolle-Kampen, March 9.

Further national strikes are planned on ten separate days in coming weeks:

  • March 14-15

  • March 20, 22, 24

  • March 29-30

  • April 3, 5, 7.

Unless averted, the labor action will likely cause disruptions to modes of public transportation, such as train and bus services. Increased demand for alternative modes of transportation is likely.

Strike participants may hold demonstrations, especially near transportation hubs, government buildings, public squares, and city centers. Authorities may monitor any such gatherings that materialize and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds.

Advice

Confirm all transportation services. Prepare for delays and increased demand for alternative modes of transportation. Exercise caution near any sites where gatherings materialize. Monitor official channels for updates on strike action.
