Tehrik-e-Insaf party threatens to hold blockades across Pakistan as of March 6 in response to arrest warrants for PTI leader Imran Khan.

Warning

Event

As of March 6, the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party has threatened to launch nationwide blockades if authorities arrest PTI leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Authorities issued arrest warrants for Khan after the PTI leader was implicated on several charges, including relating to his alleged involvement in a money laundering case. Organizers have also planned several rallies since March 4 to garner grassroots-level political support ahead of the provincial elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Activists will gather in Shamkot March 7 and hold a rally in Lahore March 8.

While organizers did not immediately specify additional details, PTI supporters are likely to hold gatherings, especially near the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and political party offices, as well as in the vicinity of other prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares or grounds, and major thoroughfares. Gathering sizes will likely vary by location; previous larger demonstrations have drawn thousands of participants, especially in major urban centers such as Islamabad and in Punjab Province.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near any PTI rally sites and may attempt to forcibly disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Protesters may march along or block major roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible near larger demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to travel to sites near related gatherings. Plan accordingly for localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
