Pakistan: Additional protests likely to occur in Punjab Province through mid-October

Student groups will likely continue to protest across the Punjab Province through mid-October to denounce the alleged rape of a female college student on Oct. 11. Demonstrations have occurred in Lahore, Multan, Raiwand, Muzzafargah, Jahania, and Zafarwal since Oct. 14, with significant clashes between police and protestors occurring in Lahore. Although specific locations and start times are not immediately clear, potential gathering sites include outside government buildings, press clubs, monuments, sports grounds, public squares, and thoroughfares at major urban centers. Rallies usually occur in the afternoon. Participation will likely be in the hundreds.

Officials will likely maintain increased security across major Punjab urban centers and monitor any events that emerge. Authorities may attempt to disperse any gatherings through the use of force such as batons and tear gas.
