Cambodia: Southeast Asian Games to take place in several cities, including Phnom Penh, May 5-17

Cambodia to host Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh and other cities May 5-17. Tight security, localized disruptions likely at event sites.

Warning

Event

Cambodia will host the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in the capital Phnom Penh and several cities, including Kampot, Kep, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, May 5-17. Around 10,000 athletes from 11 countries will attend the event. Preliminary events will begin April 29, and the opening and closing ceremonies will occur at Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh May 5 and 17, respectively. Additionally, the 12th ASEAN Para Games will take place June 3-9.

Events will take place in the following cities and locations:

  • Phnom Penh: Army Stadium, Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Center, Morodok Techo National Stadium, Olympic National Stadium, Royal University of Phnom Penh, RSN Stadium, Visakha Stadium

  • Siem Reap: Angkor Wat

  • Sihanoukville: Sihanoukville Boulevard, next to Sokha Hotel; Otres Beach

Security
Authorities will significantly bolster security around the venues hosting events, hotels and other accommodation facilities, and transport centers. Security checkpoints and the deployment of additional personnel are likely. Street crime is likely the most significant threat to visitors during the Games, especially in crowded places near the venues.

Transportation
Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) will serve the games as the primary airport. Other airports include Siem Reap International Airport (REP). Officials will likely intensify identification and security checks, including baggage searches for arriving and departing passengers. Immigration and customs delays are possible before, during, and after the games.

The movement of athletes, officials, and spectators will likely lead to increased traffic on major highways and public transport in the host cities, particularly Phnom Penh. Increased demand for bus, taxi, and app-based ride-sharing services is likely.

Advice

Consider avoiding event sites if not attending and seek alternative routes. Heed all official instructions. Carry identification documents at all times. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Allow additional time at airports and other transport centers to pass through security screenings, and for ground transport in host cities due to likely traffic congestion. Confirm transport arrangements and hotel reservations in advance.
