Civil society group to protest nationwide in Eswatini to mark anniversary of monarchy, April 12; possible blockades at borders, clashes.

Warning

Event

The pro-democracy Multi-Stakeholder Forum (MSF), a coalition of pro-democracy groups that include the Political Party Assembly (PPA), announced they would enact border blockades, transport strikes, and protests nationwide on April 12. They are protesting the fiftieth-anniversary commemoration of the establishment of the monarchy and the banning of political parties. Their demands include democratic reforms to the country and the holding of a national dialogue on political reform. Authorities have forbidden the protests and warned of increased security ahead of the demonstrations.

Protestors plan to deliver petitions to the Parliament in Lobamba at 08:00 and to the United Nations offices in Mbabane at 10:00 on April 12. Demonstrations are scheduled at Oshoek and Matsamo border posts from 10:00. In solidarity with the MSF, the Swaziland Transport, Communication and Allied Workers Union (SWATCAWU) has announced that public transport would not be operating. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) have also expressed their solidarity and could also partake in protests near the borders with South Africa. Related protests may occur in other locations.

Authorities will likely maintain an increased level of security nationwide, including the deployment of checkpoints and increased patrolling near urban centers and border posts. In the event of protests, clashes may occur. Security-related operations could result in localized ground transport disruptions.

Advice

Exercise caution nationwide, especially near police offices and government buildings. Avoid all protests. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local news for updates for information on road and border post conditions, as protestors may not announce actions in advance. Heed the advice of local authorities. In the event of police checkpoints, do not attempt to bypass security without authorities' permission.
