South Africa: Political party to protest in Ladysmith over poor service delivery, April 20

Supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) are planning to protest in Ladysmith against poor service delivery from the local government run by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on April 20. The reasons include, amongst others, the return of a corrupt municipal officer, water shortages, lack of sewage disposal, and criminality. This is a counter-protest in reaction to a similar demonstration organized by the IFP on April 19. Protestors are set to gather at the Kandagar sports ground and march down the N11 to the Ladysmith municipal offices and likely end at the uThukela District offices.

Heightened security is likely due to the high potential of a counter-protest by the IFP. Road travel disruptions could occur, especially along the N11. Clashes between protesters, counter-protestors, and the police could arise should demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse or engage in acts of public violence.
