Heightened security likely along the shared Afghanistan-Iran border through early June following clashes in late May.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely along the shared Afghanistan-Iran border through at least early June following clashes between the border security forces of the two countries on May 27. The confrontation occurred along the southern portion of the shared border near Afghanistan's Nimruz Province and Iran's Sistan va Baluchestan Province. Several casualties were reported. The exact cause of the recent confrontation is unclear but comes amid persistent tensions, including over water access, between the two sides. The Milak-Zaranj border crossing has been closed in response.

Additional security personnel from both countries are likely to be deployed to the shared border, particularly along its southern portions. Additional confrontations and limited incursions are possible. Additional crossing points could be closed in response to the recent tensions. Disruptions to road travel and freight transport are likely.

Advice

Reconfirm the status of border crossings before travel or transporting goods across the border. Consider avoiding recent conflict areas. Heed the instructions of local officials.
