Increased security likely in Kerou township, Benin, over coming days following attack on Koabagou during night of May 1-2.
Event
Heightened security is likely in Kerou township into at least mid-May after an attack by unidentified assailants left at least seven people dead in Koabagou during the night of May 1-2; an unspecified number of residents also remain missing following the incident. Authorities have responded by deploying additional government troops to the area; as of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Koabagou is located on the outskirts of Benin's Pendjari National Park.
Despite a heightened security presence in northern Benin, additional attacks remain possible in the near term, particularly along the border with Burkina Faso.
Context
Kerou is one of seven townships in northern Benin that have been under 19:00-06:00 nightly curfews since early March due to the deteriorating security situation related to terrorist attacks. Other townships subject to the curfew are Banikoara, Karimama, Segbana, Materi, Cobly, and Tangieta, as well as villages bordering W and Pendjari national parks.
Advice
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in northern Benin. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
