DRC: Activists to stage a protest march in Kinshasa May 13

Political activists associated with the Commitment for Citizenship and Development (ECIDE), Together for the Republic, Leadership and Governance for Development (LGD), and the All Volunteers for the Recovery of the DRC (ENVOL) announced plans to stage a protest march in Kinshasa on May 13. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce insecurity in the country's eastern regions, the high cost of living, and the alleged chaotic electoral process. Participants will gather at two simultaneous points of departure starting at 08:00 and march to the People's Palace (Palais du Peuple).

The first march route will gather participants at the Super Lemba roundabout and march through the Kinshasa interchange along Limete Boulevard, Lumumba Boulevard, and Sendwe Avenue. The second protest route will gather on Benseke Avenue (Sakombi Place) and march along Benseke Avenue via Ma Campagne Fuel Station, Triomphale Avenue (Kasa-Vubu Avenue), to the People's Palace. Opposition leaders announced this event will be the first in a series of protest marches until their demands are met. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to monitor the demonstration. Localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
