Authorities expand nighttime curfew hours in Kindu, Maniema Province, DRC, as of May 9 following recent clashes; increased security likely.
Event
Officials in Maniema Province have expanded the nighttime curfew hours in effect in the provincial capital Kindu as of May 9 after violent clashes between youths and security forces in the city left two people dead overnight May 6-7. The nighttime curfew will reportedly be in effect 20:00-06:00 into at least May 17; after the expanded-curfew period expires, the city's nighttime curfew hours will revert to the previously scheduled 21:00-05:00 period. Protest activity reportedly materialized in Kindu following the clashes to denounce insecurity in the area, with some demonstrators setting fire to a Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party building.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in Kindu over the coming days. Transport and business disruptions are possible due to the expanded curfew hours, especially in any areas that are subject to other increased security measures. Further demonstrations, vandalism, and violent clashes cannot be ruled out in the city over the short term.
