Officials in Kwango Province are reportedly implementing a 20:00-05:00 until further notice, as of May 14. The announcement was made on May 13 following renewed clashes between the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC) and a local militia known both as Mobondo or Batshongo depending on the location, resulting in at least 11 casualties. The curfew will be implemented by additional FARDC reinforcements from Kinshasa, with patrols reportedly concentrating along the N1 highway.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in Kwango over the coming days. Transport and business disruptions are possible due to the curfew, especially in any areas that are subject to other increased security measures. Further clashes cannot be ruled out in the province in the coming days.
