DRC: Conflicting political marches planned in Kinshasa, May 20 /update 2

Conflicting political marches planned by ruling and opposition parties in Kinshasa, DRC, May 20. Likely disruptions; possible clashes.

Warning

Event

Members of the ruling party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) youth league, and the opposition party coalition, including the Commitment for Citizenship and Development (ECIDE), Together for the Republic, Leadership and Governance for Development (LGD), and the All Volunteers for the Recovery of the DRC (ENVOL), plan to protest in Kinshasa on May 20. The opposition parties had planned to march through the capital on May 13 to denounce insecurity in the country's eastern regions, the high cost of living, and the alleged chaotic electoral process. They had then agreed on the postponement after authorities cited potential challenges in securing the demonstration.

Ruling party supporters and opposition-coalition members have announced overlapping protest routes:

  • UDSP supporters announced they will gather at the Ngaba roundabout, march down Lumumba Boulevard, and end at Saint Raphael church.

  • Supporters of the coalition announced they will gather at the Super Lemba roundabout, march down Lumumba Boulevard and Triomphale Avenue, and end at the Palais du Peuple.

Authorities have approved the UDSP's protest route, but have forbidden the coalition's, requesting they march from Sakombi roundabout, through Kasa Vubu, and end at the YMCA.

Despite the interdict, opposition party members could proceed along their preferred route. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between demonstrators, counter-demonstrators, and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

As a precaution, avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Plan for traffic disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local media for updated information. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
