Iran: Further anti-government protests likely nationwide through at least late May following recent execution of activists

Additional anti-government protests likely across Iran through at least late May after government's recent execution of activists.

Warning

Event

Activists will likely stage additional anti-government demonstrations nationwide through at least late May after protests denouncing the recent execution of imprisoned demonstrators occurred in several cities, including Tehran. On May 19, three men were executed after being arrested and charged with killing three security force personnel in Isfahan during the violent 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini. Although activists have yet to announce specific times and locations, likely gathering sites include universities, public squares, major thoroughfares, and government buildings.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are almost certain near any gathering sites. Clashes between security forces and protesters are likely.

Context

Iran is entering its 245th day of nationwide civil unrest. The recent executions will likely exacerbate the anti-government stance in the country. Human rights groups alleged that executions have increased significantly since mid-April 2023.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected areas.
