Mexico: Flight operations resume at Mexico City International Airport May 20 /update 1

Authorities reopen Mexico City International Airport, Mexico, May 20 following closure due to volcanic activity.

Warning

Event

Flight operations have resumed at Benito Juarez Mexico City International Airport (MEX) as of the late morning of May 20, following an earlier closure due to increased activity at Popocatepetl volcano and associated ash fall.

Lingering flight disruptions are likely well into the afternoon as carriers reposition aircraft and work to clear passenger backlogs. Authorities could order further closures of the facility with little to no advance notice, should local volcanic activity and ashfall conditions warrant such a measure.

Advice

Reconfirm flights at MEX through at least the end of May 20. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
