Nepal: Protests planned across Koshi Province from May 9

Protests planned across Koshi Province, Nepal, from May 9. Increased security likely; localized disruptions, violence possible.

Warning

Event

Various ethnic and political groups will hold fresh protests across Nepal's Koshi Province from May 9 to demand a change in the province's name. Sporadic violence and localized disruptions are likely during rallies. Popular protest venues include government buildings, public squares, prominent traffic intersections, and major roadways, mainly in Biratnagar. Activists may enforce closures of local government offices and/or businesses in non-urban areas. Several dozen to a few hundred people may join each event; activists typically gather from the late morning through the afternoon. Planned events include:

  • May 9: Torch march in Damaka, Jhapa District.

  • May 11 onwards: Blockades of public venues visited by lawmakers, including official meeting sites and hotels, and the vandalism of name boards with the province's name.

  • May 16-19: District-level rallies to mobilize support for a march towards the provincial assembly building in Biratnagar on an unspecified date.

Further related protests may occur on dates and at locations not mentioned above. Authorities will likely monitor large protests and may try to forcibly disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Arson and vandalism cannot be ruled out, especially during protests in Biratnagar. Clashes between protesters and police have occurred during earlier rallies and remain possible. Mass arrests or protester deaths perceived to be caused by police action may lead to violent retaliatory demonstrations. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Exercise caution near government buildings. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
