Pakistan: Security operation ongoing in Karachi over foiled terror plot targeting Chinese nationals as of the evening of May 10

Security operation ongoing in Karachi, Pakistan, May 10, to apprehend terror suspect targeting Chinese nationals. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

A search operation for a terror suspect continues in the Bin Qasim Town, Shah Latif Town, and Sukhan areas of Karachi as of the evening of May 10. Local police claim to have foiled a terror plot allegedly targeting Chinese nationals by shooting at two armed men who attempted to storm the Hong Kong Rivers and Pak China Boatyard in Malir District around 09:00. While one assailant died on the spot, security forces are attempting to locate the other suspect who escaped. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Increased security is likely at the incident site, as well as in areas affected by search operations. Localized transport disruptions due to police movement and checkpoints are possible.

Context

The terror risk remains high across Pakistan. In particular, separatist groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) have targeted Chinese entities in the past, including high-profile attacks in Karachi targeting the Chinese consulate and the Confucius Institute located within the University of Karachi compound. Although authorities have bolstered security deployment at sites with concentrations of foreign workers, additional attacks cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in the affected areas. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
