Paraguay: Protests likely nationwide as of May 3 due to allegations of voter fraud in presidential election
Protests likely across Paraguay as of May 3 due to voter fraud allegations. Heightened security, disruptions likely. Clashes possible.
Event
Protests are likely throughout Paraguay as of May 3 due to allegations of voter fraud in the April 30 presidential election won by Santiago Pena. Third-place candidate Paraguayo Cubas has called demonstrations to denounce the results. Hundreds of Cubas's supporters launched protests May 1 and 2, particularly by the Electoral Court in Asuncion, blocking roads with burning tires and lobbing stones; police fired rubber bullets at protesters in return. Although reports indicate security forces have cleared most routes, Cubas has announced his intention to travel to Asuncion to lead demonstrations.
Further protests are probable over the coming days, particularly in Asuncion. A heightened security presence, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely near gathering sites. Vandalism and clashes with security forces are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. If violence occurs, immediately seek shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Do not attempt to bypass blockades; wait for security forces to dismantle them. Monitor local news sources for further information. Confirm appointments, and plan for localized business and transport disruptions.
