Sri Lanka: Adverse weather forecast across much of the country through at least May 6

Event

Severe weather is forecast across Sri Lanka through at least May 6. The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology issued an amber advisory (the middle level on a three-tier scale) for heavy rainfall through early May 6. Rainfall totals of more than 7.5 cm (3 inches) are forecast across parts of Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, and Northern provinces and Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts in Central province. Rainfall totals of more than 5 cm (2 inches) are expected across much of the rest of the country. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

The heavy downpours may be accompanied by thunderstorms and could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. The Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center has issued amber landfall warnings in parts of Badulla District in Uva Province and Galle District in Southern Province. Yellow landslide warnings have been issued for parts of Badulla, Galle, Kegalle, Matale, and Metara districts. Strong winds of 40-50 kph (25-31 mph) are expected in western and southern coastal areas.

Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the country. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.
