Warning

Event

Lingering heightened security and traffic disruptions are possible in parts of downtown Buenos Aires June 21 after unionized workers affiliated with several organizations - including the Argentine Workers' Central Union (Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina, CTA), the General Confederation of Labor (Confederacion General de Trabajo, CGT), and the Association of State Workers of the City of Buenos Aires (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, ATE) - launched a protest march from the Obelisco to the Casa de Jujuy on Avenida Santa Fe in the capital earlier in the day. Participants gathered to demand that national authorities take action to halt the perceived repression of protest activity in Jujuy Province in connection with the recent approval of a new provincial constitution there. Demonstrators also gathered to demand that authorities in Jujuy Province raise salaries as requested by teachers' unions and others in the province and fulfill indigenous communities' land-related demands. The action comes as education-sector and other workers affiliated with various unions have reportedly begun to go on strike as of June 21 ahead of a national teachers' strike scheduled June 22.

Various unions and civil society groups have also called for a related protest march in Cordoba on June 22. Participants will reportedly gather at the Casa de Jujuy, located at the intersection of Avenida Colon and Jujuy, and march to an as-yet-unspecified location from 10:00. Thousands of people may participate in the demonstration.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely near the June 22 march and any other related demonstrations that materialize. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in the impacted areas June 21-22, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
