Authorities confirmed on June 6 that at least 18 people were killed during a series of attacks in Irumu Territory, Ituri Province. Armed assailants assaulted the villages of Bekembele, Bulesi, and Mutuyeyi on June 3, killing at least eight and kidnapping an unknown amount of residents. On June 4, militants killed two people in Makanga and assaulted Muteyi, where a further eight farmers were killed. The assailants also looted several properties. Authorities have blamed the Islamic State (IS)-aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) for the attacks.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the coming days. Further attacks are possible.
Context
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a State of Siege in Ituri and North Kivu. Fatal attacks and kidnappings conducted by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the area are regularly reported. Militants usually use significant and indiscriminate violence, and foreign personnel may become the target of attacks due to the perception that they are wealthy and vulnerable.
