Authorities confirmed at least 12 people were killed and two injured during an armed attack in the village of Bukokoma in the Ruwenzori area of Beni Territory, North Kivu Province, at approximately 22:00 on June 8. Shortly before the attack, two people were killed in the neighboring village of Mulya. While search operations for the missing are ongoing, the Congolese military acknowledged additional security forces would be deployed to pursue the perpetrators. Authorities have blamed the Islamic State (IS)-aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) for the attack.
Officials have likely deployed additional security forces in the area. Violence could continue in the coming days. Movement restrictions, including road closures and curfews, are possible in the affected areas.
Context
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu. Fatal attacks and kidnappings are regularly carried out by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the east of the country.
