Further violence remains possible in the coming days across the Kwamouth Territory, Mai-Ndombe Province, following an attack in the area. Assailants, reportedly belonging to the Mobondo militia, ambushed a bus on the outskirt of the Mulunu locality early June 26; the Mobondo militia allies itself with the Yaka community. The attack left at least 20 individuals dead. An unspecified number of people have also been kidnapped or remain unaccounted for. The exact reason for the violence is unclear.
Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out in the coming days and weeks. Officials will likely deploy additional security forces and could impose movement restrictive measures, such as road closures, gathering bans, or curfews.
Context
The Kwamouth territory has been subject to elevated violence in recent months. Clashes between members of the Teke and Yaka communities over local grievances have left at least 180 people killed in Kwamouth Territory, Mai-Ndombe Province, July-October 2022.
