Italy: Labor unions plan aviation sector strikes, June 20

Labor unions plan aviation sector strikes nationwide in Italy June 20. Disruptions likely; confirm flight reservations.

Warning

Event

Multiple labor unions representing workers in Italy's air transport sector plan to strike June 20, over pay and working conditions. The 24-hour industrial action will affect airline ground handling staff, air traffic controllers (ATC), Vueling Airline (VY) staff, and other services, in different regions and at different times. There is likely to be a significant cumulative effect nationwide. Flight services are however guaranteed by law 07:00-10:00 and 18:00-21:00.

ATC staff will strike nationwide from 00:01-23:59, as will ground staff at Genoa Airport (GOA) and the security staff at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). Other separate ground services staff plan four-hour strikes in the following airports:

  • Alghero (AHO): 12:00-16:00

  • Florence (FLR): 12:00-16:00

  • Milan Malpensa (MXP): 11:00-15:00

  • Naples (NAP): 09:00-13:00

  • Pisa (PSA): 12:00-16:00.

  • Rome (FCO): 12:00-16:00.

Unless completely averted, the walkout will probably cause significant flight disruptions on the scheduled date. Italian law requires workers to maintain a minimum level of service during labor strikes in critical transport and infrastructure sectors. Protests are possible by striking workers.

Advice

Monitor trusted local sources for updates on the status of the new strike date. Reconfirm all travel arrangements if booked to within or via Italy June 20. Arrive at the airport well ahead of schedule. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
