Jamaica: Authorities to maintain Zones of Special Operations in seven towns through at least late August due to high crime levels

Officials in Jamaica extend Zones of Special Operations in four parishes through at least late August. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Authorities in Jamaica have extended the duration of seven existing Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) across four of the nation's parishes through at least Aug. 24. The purpose of the measure is to continue a slate of special powers granted to law enforcement officials to fight very high levels of violent crime in the affected areas. The Zones of Special Operations encompass Denham Town in Kingston Parish; Norwood and Mount Salem in Saint James Parish; Greenwich Town, Parade Gardens, and August Town in Saint Andrew Parish; and Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland Parish. The Jamaican Parliament has approved such extensions every 60 days since the zones first went into effect in early 2022.

Under Jamaican law, in locations declared to be Zones of Special Operations, law enforcement units are placed under the command of a military officer. Police have special powers to cordon off or impose curfews within the zone, conduct warrantless searches and seizures, and make arrests.

Heightened security will continue in the designated ZOSOs. Authorities could implement curfews, road closures, and/or checkpoints with little to no warning, which may result in localized transport and business disruptions.

Advice

Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in or near the declared ZOSOs. Avoid any areas where security personnel appear to be deploying for an operation. Do not attempt to navigate any roads closed by authorities. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials, including any curfew orders.
