Serbia: As of June 22, activists plan further nationwide protests against violence

As of June 22, activists plan further nationwide protests in Serbia to denounce violence. The main action planned for Belgrade on June 24.

Warning

Event

As of June 22, the "Serbia Against Violence" (Srbija protiv nasilja) organization will continue leading protests in the coming days to denounce two recent mass shootings in Serbia. The group has stated it will hold demonstrations in 20 urban centers and block traffic in 10 locations nationwide, though exact dates and locations for many events are unclear.

The largest protest is planned for Belgrade from 18:00-21:00 on June 24. Participants will gather at the National Assembly and march to the Autokomanda interchange via Knez Milos, Nemanjin, and Slavija roads.

This is the eighth demonstration in recent weeks to demand a stop to the promotion of violence in Serbian media and the resignation of the government ministers involved in the country's security. Protest organizers have stated they will escalate their actions should the government not accede to their demands.

The events, especially in Belgrade, will likely attract several thousand people and significant security force deployments. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police are not anticipated but cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate the impact of any associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow extra time for travel in the areas affected by demonstrations.
