Vietnam: Authorities maintaining elevated security in Cu Kuin District, Dak Lak Province, as of June 16 following two security incidents June 11
Officials in Cu Kuin District, Dak Lak Province, Vietnam on high alert, as of June 16 following attacks on two police stations, June 11.
Event
Authorities are maintaining a heightened security posture in Dak Lak Province's Cu Kuin District, as of June 16. The increased security measures come after unknown assailants carried out armed attacks against two police stations in Ea Tieu and Ea Ktur respectively on June 11. The cause of the incidents remains unclear. There are no conflicting reports on the exact number of casualties, but both officers and civilians were reportedly among the dead. No groups have claimed responsibility for the incidents. Authorities stated they have arrested 46 individuals suspected of being connected to the incidents as of June 13.
Heightened security will likely continue until the investigations end. Increased security measures could lead to localized transport disruptions. Further violence cannot be ruled out.
Context
Two simultaneous attacks suggest that the assaults were organized instead of ordinary crimes. Armed attacks are rare in Vietnam, given the country's relatively stable political environment, and no known presence of terrorist organizations. Nonetheless, the central highlands, where Cu Kuin District is located, is home to several groups of ethnically distinct people known collectively as Montagnards. Various government-led development projects in recent years have led to land confiscations and displacement of Montagnards in Cu Kuin District, and the recent attacks may be linked to such actions. There is no sign that security risks in major urban centers such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have escalated.
Advice
Heed the instructions of local authorities. Carry identification, remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped by security personnel.
