Vietnam: Power supply shortages likely to persist nationwide through at least late June /update 1

Power supply shortages likely to persist across Vietnam through late June; disruptions to business and communications likely amid outages.

Informational

Event

Power supply shortages are likely to continue across Vietnam through at least late June due to increased demand for energy consumption amid extreme heat. Consequent outages are likely to impact most parts of the country, including the capital Hanoi. As of June 1, officials have advised industrial users to operate during off-peak hours and households to conserve energy. State-run utility company Vietnam Electricity previously implemented rolling power cuts in May. Authorities may enact additional austerity measures, including reducing retail spaces' business hours, if the ongoing shortages persist.

Temporary business and communications disruptions are likely during power outages; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Additionally, power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an elevated security threat during power outages as opportunistic criminal activity may increase. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences.

Advice

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled.
