Authorities have placed parts of south Belize City under a state of emergency as of July 31 following an increase in gang violence in the area. The state of emergency covers the following areas:
Between Orange Street, Reggae Street, Albert Street, and Central America Boulevard.
Between Orange Street, Water Lane, Albert Street, and Collet Canal, including Taylor's Alley.
Between Central America Boulevard, George Price Highway, and Faber Road.
Police have been carrying out major security operations. The state of emergency allows enhanced powers of arrest and detention, as well as the ability to call on military support. Authorities have not commented on the duration of the state of emergency, but it may last until at least mid-August.
Heightened security and disruptions to transit and business are likely throughout south Belize City. An expansion of the state of emergency areas is possible. Additional gang violence or clashes with security forces are possible.
