Several civil society groups will commemorate the Genocost in Kinshasa Aug. 2. Participants will gather from 15:00 at Place des Evolues. The event may draw hundreds of people. The Genocost is an initiative to commemorate Congolese killed in various conflicts across the country, with Aug. 2 corresponding to the beginning of the second Congo war (1998-2003). Other gatherings remain likely nationwide, including in Goma.

Increased security and localized road disruptions are likely near the protest site. Although widespread violence is not likely, police may quickly resort to force and riot control tactics to disperse participants if they are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and gatherings. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the protest venue. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
