Event
Increased security measures and localized travel disruptions are likely in Kinshasa during the Jeux de la Francophonie event, scheduled to occur July 28-Aug. 6. The event held every four years hosts thousands of young athletes and artists mostly from French-speaking nations. Officials will deploy additional police and armed forces in the capital to protect personnel and sites, and facilitate road movement.
Security forces may establish road closures, checkpoints, and carry out frequent searches of vehicles and personnel. Such measures are likely near event venues, to and from Kinshasa N'djili International Airport (FIH), as well as in the vicinity of the Kinshasa University (Unikin) where most participants will reside. Increased road congestion is likely across Kinshasa for the duration of the event. The full lists of sporting and cultural events and sites are accessible here. Spontaneous socio-political political protests may occur; security forces will likely disperse any gathering that materializes.
