France: Yellow Vests movement to stage protests in Paris July 22

Yellow Vests movement to protest in central Paris, France, from 13:00 July 22. Increased security, disruptions likely; violence possible.

Warning

Event

Activists associated with the Yellow Vests (Gilets Jaunes) movement plan to protest march in central Paris July 22 against several issues, including the perceived low salary levels, the retirement age increase, and the French involvement in the Russo-Ukrainian War, among other things. Participants will gather at Place du Bataillon du Pacifique (Bercy) at 13:00 before departing to Place de la Republique at 15:00. Demonstrators will walk from Place du Bataillon du Pacifique east-southeast on Boulevard de Bercy, east-northeast on Boulevard de Reuilly, northwest on Rue de Reuilly, northwest on Rue de Faidherbe, northeast on Rue de Charonne and northwest on Boulevard Voltaire before arriving at the Place de la Republique. It is unclear how many participants the gathering will attract.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy additional police to monitor these demonstrations. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Low-level violence, especially targeted at the police, cannot be discounted.

Context

The Gilets Jaune movement has been protesting against various government policies since 2018. Further protests are possible.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a standard precaution. Consider alternate travel routes and allow extra time to circumvent the impacted area. Follow local transport and security advice. Immediately leave the site at the first sign of potential violence.
