Germany, Switzerland: Adverse weather forecast across southwestern Germany and Switzerland through at least early July 12
Thunderstorms forecast across southwestern Germany and Switzerland through July 12. Possible transport, business, and utility disruptions.
Event
Severe weather is forecast across parts of southwestern Germany and across Switzerland through at least early July 12. Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact the region from late afternoon July 11 through the early hours of July 12. Storms may be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, and possible hail. Rainfall amounts of up to 4 cm (1.6 inches) in the space of a few hours and winds gusting up to 120 kph (75 mph) are possible during the storms. Heavy downpours could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. Strong winds may cause property damage and power outages.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a red level (the second highest level on a four tier-scale) advanced warning for severe thunderstorms across much of central and southern Baden-Wurttemeberg and parts of southwestern Bavaria states. MeteoSwiss has issued red level 4 (out of 5) advanced thunderstorm warnings across much of the country, with the exception of Ticino and parts of eastern and southern Grisons cantons, where orange level 3 warnings are in place. Officials could update and extend the coverage of the weather alerts over the coming hours.
Hazardous Conditions
The storms could produce rounds of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorm activity throughout the affected area. Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Strong winds could lead to downed power lines and consequent power outages, as well as damage from flying debris.
Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports in the region.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in affected areas. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
