Persian Gulf: Iran reportedly seizes commercial vessel in international waters July 6

Iran reportedly seizes commercial vessel in international waters in Persian Gulf July 6; US says vessel possibly involved in smuggling.

Informational

Event

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly seized control of a commercial vessel in the Persian Gulf July 6. US authorities monitoring the situation alleged that the vessel, which Iranian forces intercepted some 109 km (68 miles) northeast of Ad-Dammam, may have been engaged in smuggling activity. The US Navy did not respond further to the incident. Additional details regarding Iran's seizure of the vessel were not immediately reported.

Context

The vessel seizure notably comes after the US Navy reportedly prevented Iranian authorities from seizing two commercial tankers in the Gulf of Oman July 5. US authorities have stressed that the July 5 and July 6 incidents are different in nature due to the possible smuggling activity of the vessel seized July 6. US Navy officials claim that Iran has "harassed, attacked, or seized nearly 20 internationally flagged merchant vessels" since 2021.

Tehran frequently intercepts small vessels suspected of smuggling Iranian oil for sale at increased prices abroad. Iranian oil is subject to international sanctions and is cheaper than that of some neighboring countries, creating arbitrage opportunities for smugglers.

Advice

Exercise caution and reconfirm routes with maritime authorities if transiting or shipping freight via or near the Persian Gulf.
