Portugal: Unionized public railway workers striking nationwide intermittently July 6-Aug. 6
Unionized public railway workers in Portugal striking intermittently July 6-Aug. 6; transport disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized railway workers are observing a nationwide intermittent strike from July 6-Aug. 6. Unions are denouncing the perceived inequity in salary scales of Comboios de Portugal (CP), the state-owned national rail operator. The strike will be intermittent as no clear schedule has been presented publicly. CP states that the Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Internacional, InterRegional, and Regional trains will be affected directly.
Rail transport disruptions are likely throughout the strike period. Increased congestion is likely on available rail services, as well as an increased demand for alternative means of transport. Demonstrations are not expected, although they might occur near major transport hubs in major cities. Those that do occur are unlikely to be disruptive.
Advice
Check schedules of transport services and allow extra time to reach destinations in Portugal July 6-Aug. 6. Plan for congestion on roads and increased demand for private hire vehicles during strike periods. Avoid all protests.
