South Africa: Gang violence and protests likely to persist in Riverlea, Johannesburg, through early August /update 1

Event

Further protests are likely in Johannesburg's Riverlea area through early August following additional gang-related casualties in late July. Residents reportedly blockaded Main Reef Road, which runs near Riverlea, on July 31 to protest increasing levels of insecurity. Rival armed groups, thought to be involved in illegal mining in the area, engaged in confrontations in the area overnight July 29/30. As of July 31, at least 25 casualties have been reported following these confrontations. The epicenter of the confrontations is reportedly Zamamphilo. The violence, the latest recently, is likely between illegal miners (Zama Zamas) over control of informal mining sites.

Any further clashes will pose an incidental threat to bystanders in the vicinity. Responses to the violence, including security force deployments or protests, could impact roads in the area, including Main Reef Road, located between Riverlea and Industria. Protests in reaction to any further incidents will likely generate additional disruptions to travel.
