South Africa: Water disruptions to occur in multiple areas in Gauteng Province July 11-14
Water disruptions to occur in numerous localities in Gauteng Province, South Africa, July 11-14 due to maintenance operations.
Event
South Africa's water provider Rand Water plans to temporarily disrupt water distribution in multiple locations across Gauteng Province from 19:00 July 11 until 05:00 July 14. The purpose of the disruptions is to provide system upgrades and conduct maintenance at several water distribution facilities. Rand Water indicated that Rustenburg, Mogale City, and Rand West residents would likely experience intermittent water supply disruptions. In contrast, customers residing in higher elevations will likely experience a more extended outage. Rand Water distribution sources are available at various hospitals, clinics, schools, municipal offices, police stations, recreational centers, and retail shopping centers for impacted customers across Sandton, Soweto, Ennerdale, Langlaagte, Randburg, Southburg, Southdale, and Roodepoort.
Rand Water officials plan to complete work on the Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant, Eikenhof Booster Pumping Station, Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant, and Zwartkopjes System. Consequently, communities that are serviced by the Daleside Booster Station, Zwartkopjes Booster Station, and Eikenhof Booster Station will likely experience a reduction in the supply of water anywhere between 24-50% for a period of eight to 58 hours, while a complete resumption of water will require an additional one to ten days.
Business disruptions are possible, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water. The water outages could extend beyond the estimated restoration time.
Advice
Stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations if operating in the impacted areas. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water pressure and quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage.
