UK: Gatwick Airport ground staff strike slated for July 28-Aug. 1 canceled; action slated for Aug. 4-8 partially canceled

Airport ground staff union strikes planned for July 28-Aug. 1 canceled at London Gatwick Airport, UK; Aug. 4-8 strikes partially canceled.

Informational

Event

Ground staff and baggage handlers represented by the Unite labor union have canceled industrial actions planned at London Gatwick Airport (LGW). Employees of all four ground handling companies serving the facility fully canceled a walkout originally slated for July 28-Aug. 1; however, workers at only three of the service providers have canceled a work stoppage planned for Aug. 4-8. As of early July 28, unionized employees at Gatwick Ground Services (GGS), which provides ground handling for British Airways (BA), were still voting on an increased pay offer from management and had yet to announce whether they would cancel their Aug. 4-8 strike or not.

Unless averted, the strike by GGS employees could result in disruptions to flight check-in and baggage processing on British Airways flights Aug. 4-8. Some flight disruptions due to passenger delays may also occur.

Advice

Monitor local sources for updated information on the status of the GGS strike. If booked to fly British Airways out of LGW Aug. 4-8, arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for check-in and baggage handling; contact the travel service provider to confirm flight schedules.
