UK: Unionized railway workers start industrial action across England, July 3-8
Railway workers embark on industrial action across England, UK, July 3-8; rail travel disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized railway workers represented by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) union have announced a stoppage of non-contractual overtime, July 3-8. The labor union is calling for improved pay. The action will impact 15 rail operating companies: Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, Greater Anglia, GWR, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Island Line, LNER, Northern Trains, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line, TransPennine Express, and West Midlands Trains. National Rail, the UK's rail network operator, has warned that services will be affected.
The strike will likely cause disruptions to rail transport services throughout the UK. Increased demand for other forms of transportation is likely. Lingering disruptions are likely after the strike concludes as operators reposition rolling stock. Striking workers may protest outside railway stations and other transport hubs; these are unlikely to be severely disruptive.
Advice
Reconfirm rail booking and travel plans July 3-8. Follow local travel and security advice. Avoid any demonstrations that could materialize as a precaution.
