UK: Unionized railway workers start nationwide industrial action July 17-22
Labor unions start industrial action across UK rail network July 17-22; rail travel disruptions reported.
Event
Unionized railway workers represented by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) and Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) unions have announced separate industrial action across the country July 17-22. Members of ASLEF will participate in action short of a strike, including an overtime ban, July 17-22; this will impact 13 of the UK's rail operating companies. Separately, RMT members will go on strike July 20 and 22; this will affect 22 rail operating companies. Both labor unions are calling for improved pay. The RMT has also called for a further strike July 29.
National Rail, the UK's rail network operator, has announced that services will be severely affected throughout this period. Disruptions will vary by day and by rail service provider. Full details are at the National Rail site here.
The strike will likely cause significant disruptions to rail transport services throughout the UK. Increased demand for other forms of transportation is likely. Lingering disruptions are likely after the strike concludes as operators reposition rolling stock. Striking workers may protest outside railway stations and other transport hubs.
