Belgium: Increased security likely in Oupeye and Brussels following Aug. 18-19 unrest over police-involved shooting /update 1

Increased security likely in Oupeye and Brussels, Belgium, following Aug. 18-19 rioting over police shooting of local resident.

Warning

Event

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in parts of Belgium over the coming days following unrest that erupted during the night of Aug. 18-19 in reaction to the police-involved killing of a local resident in the Liege suburb of Oupeye. Officers reportedly shot the individual after he refused to comply with instructions during a police stop for allegedly operating an ATV in a dangerous manner. The incident prompted activists to take to the streets in Oupeye and nearby Herstal, engaging in localized vandalism and clashing with security personnel.

Although the unrest had largely abated by the early hours of Aug. 22, authorities in Oupeye have banned gatherings of four or more people until Aug. 28. TEC bus lines 5 and 7 have suspended service to Oupeye, Hermee, Vivegnis, and La Prealle until further notice. Moreover, the mayor of Brussels has reinforced security in the Belgian capital out of an abundance of caution; city officials have not, however, released details on specific measures that have been implemented or how long they will remain in place.

Additional protest activity and associated clashes cannot be ruled out. Police will move quickly to disperse any such gatherings that may materialize. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed instructions of local authorities.
