Belgium: Increased security likely in Oupeye following Aug. 18-19 unrest over police shooting of resident

Increased security likely in Oupeye, Belgium, in coming days following violent Aug. 18-19 unrest over police shooting of local resident.

Warning

Event

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in Oupeye, and possibly the nearby city of Liege, in Liege Province, over the coming days following unrest that broke out overnight Aug. 18-19 in response to the officer-involved shooting and killing of a local resident Aug. 18. Reports indicate that officers shot the individual, who was allegedly riding a quadbike dangerously, after he refused to comply with a police check. In the hours following the incident, demonstrators took to the streets, engaging in localized vandalism. Authorities deployed additional police and called in reinforcements from Liege, which prompted clashes in the vicinity of Chateau d'Oupeye; the protests occurred 22:00-03:00. Police reportedly made several arrests. As of the late morning of Aug. 19, authorities have restored calm.

Additional protest activity and associated clashes cannot be ruled out. Any protest materializing will prompt localized transport and business disruptions in the impacted area.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed instructions of local authorities.
